The training with the dual study starts every year on August 15th.

The first semester at Hei 21 begins the following January. You will complete semesters 1 to 5 as a part-time student with about 5 days per semester. After the 5th semester, the final examinations for health and nursing care also take place. The study phase 2 (semesters 6 to 8) is a full-time study from winter semester on.

What is the content of the course of studies?

1st year of training

– 1st semester: Scientific work, basics of nursing (FS)

2nd year of training

– 2nd semester: Nursing scientific basics, nursing action in acute situations, nursing reservation and medical delegation tasks

– 3rd semester: Health conditions and disease phenomena, target groups and fields of action (FS)

3rd year of training

– 4th semester: Nursing diagnostics, nursing care with a focus on post-operative care, nursing people with chronic and life-threatening illnesses

– 5th semester: Methods of collegial counselling, Experiencing and coping with existential situations (FS), Basics of communication and counselling (FS)

– 6th semester: methods of nursing

research, intervention and outcome, education, experience of stress and coping

– 7th semester: methods of nursing research, professionalisation of nursing, care management, project management

– 8th semester: Organisation and Management, Quality Management, Bachelor thesis

After five semesters you take the exams and you are a qualified nurse. You will be able to take over responsible new fields of work in nursing. With the contents from training and studies, you will be able, for example, to design the care of people with complex problems or to implement new guidelines and standards in nursing care.

In what fields/subject areas can I work?

The study program is divided into three study phases: During the probationary period of the apprenticeship, a propaedeutic course (trial week) takes place at the Hei 21. Only after the probationary period does the second phase begin with enrollment; it has five semesters, one module per semester. The nursing knowledge gained during training is expanded in these university modules.

What are the entry requirements?

    or you can do your training part time, that’s also possible After the five semesters, you will take the exam and become a nursing specialist. Afterwards, a full-time course of study over three semesters begins. During this time you can of course already work as a certified nurse.

What costs will I incur as part of my studies?

You will deduct a small part of your training allowance to pay the tuition fees at the university 21. As an Asklepios trainee, you will enjoy special conditions at the Hei 21: – Phase I/propaedeutic course: 150€/month for 6 months – Enrollment fee: One-time 300€ – Phase II/Study parallel to training: 150€/month for 30 months – Phase III/Study incl. In this dual degree course, students acquire both an academic degree and a professional qualification in health and medical nursing or health and paediatric nursing. As a result, both degrees can be gained in just four years (instead of a three-year training course and a subsequent three-year degree course). The modular structure of the degree course allows students to carry out an internship and/or semester abroad during the regular study period.

What is the content of the course of studies?

The course is divided into individual modules, which impart the knowledge-based collection and identification of the individual care requirements, the planning and implementation of care based on scientific findings and individual case comprehension, the organization and design and management of care processes as well as overarching targeted interventions, especially nursing, communicative, psychosocial and ethical expertise. Furthermore, the study is divided into lectures which scientifically qualify the students for the many responsibilities of nursing support and introduce application-oriented working methods into the essential social, natural and behavioral science reference disciplines of care (medicine, psychology, sociology, education, law and politics). Students get a background understanding of the social and healthcare system and their political governance, gain scientific expertise to support applied care research, and basic knowledge of health-related case and process management. The curriculum is taught in different locations.

The teaching programme is realised at different locations. In the theory semesters, the courses take place in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. In addition, there are practical units in the Skills Lab. The practical semesters take place in cooperating health care facilities in and around Hamburg.

The degree program is developed in accordance with the new Nursing Professions Act. The degree integrates the professional license as a nursing specialist and the Bachelor of Science.

Where can I find employment later on?

Graduates can be employed in different healthcare institutions, such as hospitals, home care services, nursing homes, hospices, rehabilitation centers and special facilities.

What are the entry requirements?

  • General higher education entrance qualification or advanced technical college certificate for working people in accordance with § 38 of the Hamburg Higher Education Law.
  • Proof of a training contract with one of the cooperating training providers (currently the Albertinen-Diakoniewerk eV Hamburg, the Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf or the Altonaer Kinderkrankenhaus Hamburg) is required for admission to the course. Applications for a training place for generalized nursing care or generalized healthcare and child nursing care should be addressed directly to the cooperation partners (Albertinen-Schule, Universitäre Bildungsakademie or Altonaer-Kinderkrankenhaus Hamburg). Note: Please indicate in the application that a place in the dual degree course in nursing (BA) is sought. The educational institutions then automatically contact the university; no separate application to the university is necessary! Other requirements: At least a two-week nursing internship and medically fit to be able to carry out a nursing profession.

In what fields/subject areas can I work?

Graduates are prepared in giving professional care in partial inpatient (day-care), inpatient and outpatient healthcare facilities. The qualification profile of the course is broad, allowing for flexible entry into the profession, according to students’ individual interests. Graduates are qualified to identify care needs and provide nursing care services to people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Students are specifically prepared to systematically pursue different nursing directions, which include health-promoting, preventive, therapeutic, rehabilitative, palliative tasks as well as dignified end-of-life care. As an academically trained nurse, graduates have the responsibility to purposefully guide less skilled nurses, also to include lay caregivers and caregiving relatives in the care process, and to monitor their actions. Nursing work is now performed in cooperation with many other health professions, in close cooperation with, among others, doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and psychotherapists. Students learn how to oversee in performance processes in healthcare and to control, coordinate and monitor them on a case-related basis.

What is the content of the course of studies?

The modular study is split over 1.5 years and will be conducted in English. Advanced knowledge of medical technology is taught. The focus is on recording and processing biodata, functional and application possibilities of imaging procedures, diagnostic and therapeutic control systems and approval and evaluation procedures for medical technology products. A biomedical project is integrated into the course as a separate module. The degree course is concluded with a master’s thesis.

Where can I find employment later on?

There are a large number of potential workplaces for medical technicians. They are found, for example, in companies that develop, manufacture and distribute medical devices; in hospitals (e.g. in the context of device management or patient safety); in consultancy firms, e.g. when hospitals or doctors’ practises are purchasing new equipment; in research facilities or in authorities and health offices, which, for example, monitor compliance with technical standards.

In what fields/subject areas can I work?

Medical technology is a growth industry. There are excellent employment and career opportunities in the Hamburg region, throughout Germany and worldwide. Professional subject areas include marketing, product management, sales, development and service, application of medical devices, device management and maintenance planning, medical product advice (patient safety), quality assurance and training, hospital planning and setting up as well as in clinical research.

  • Bachelor in Medical Engineering or a successfully completed bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.

Semester fee of currently 340.40 (summer semester 2022). This sum includes the semester ticket of the “Hamburger Verkehrsverbund” (HVV), public transport.

The course deals with empirical research, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, evidence-based therapy, communication and management ability, project management and organisational development as well as innovation management.

Students have a choice of elective modules. These are health management (hospital management and quality assurance, management in healthcare and care contexts, human resource development in the health sector), neuroprosthetics and hand rehabilitation.

€ 297.- per month, € 9,895.- in total (including examination fee of € 985.-). By waiving the mailing of printed study materials, a reduced tuition fee is granted for this degree programme. The standard monthly tuition fee is reduced by € 10.- in this case. Free extension of study to four semesters is possible.
