What is the content of the course of studies?
In the Bachelor’s degree programme Medical Controlling and Management, students acquire extensive business administration basics and at the same time acquire essential contents of health economics as well as the basics of medicine in a practical and well-founded education. Through the consistent combination of the disciplines of business administration, medicine and management, skills are acquired to successfully work in fields of activity in operative and strategic medical controlling, corporate development, the project management office, quality management or as an assistant to the management and to assume leadership and management responsibility in everyday life.
The aim is to provide students with sound knowledge of essential documentation, coding and billing processes, which are a central component of revenue assurance and thus decisive for the economic success of health care facilities. In addition, they acquire extensive competences in the areas of economics, business administration and health economics.
The special feature of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Medical Controlling and Management is not only the double qualification in medicine and business administration, but also the management training acquired at the same time. In addition to the classic management skills such as assertiveness, the ability to think analytically, negotiating skills and a competent manner, you will also learn specialist skills in classic project and process management as well as quality management.
By combining the professional competences of medical controlling and management, an innovative job profile with growing significance for the health sector of the future is being created. The medical controller and medical manager is the bridge builder and important link between medicine and economics.
The Bachelor’s degree programme Medical Controlling and Management offered in the Department of Medical Management leads to the academic degree Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) after a standard period of study of 6 semesters. The Bachelor’s programme Medical Controlling and Management is state-recognised and accredited.

Where can I find employment later on?
Fields of employment after graduation are various departments in hospitals (e.g. financial controlling, medical controlling. Quality management, project management, management assistance, etc.), health centres, health insurance companies (including case management, billing, customer service), management consultancies, associations (including hospital associations, medical associations) and health institutions. Employment can take place, among other things:
- in health insurance companies as a case manager
- in consulting firms as project manager
- in large medical practices and health centres as practice manager
- in pharmaceutical companies as a DRG consultant
- as a DRG consultant for manufacturers of medical products
- in scientific institutes in the context of the further development of the DRG system
- in professional associations as scientific staff
- in health policy associations as a speaker
What are the entry requirements?
- General higher education entrance qualification,
- Subject-related higher education entrance qualification,
- Advanced technical college entrance qualification according to § 37 HmbHG
- or special access for professionals according to § 38 HmbHG via entrance examination (according to the entrance examination regulations),
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form and two recent passport photos (name on reverse),
- Copy of identity card (front and back), for foreign students identity card,
- If applicable, proof of previous employment,
- Proof of first degree, course book or degree certificate, if the applicant has already studied at other universities.
- In addition to a good knowledge of German, a knowledge of English is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
- Interesse an Gesundheitsstrukturen, am deutschen Gesundheitssystem, Interesse an Medizin und Controlling sowie an projektorientiertem Arbeiten.
- The degree programmes at MSH are NC-free: talent, motivation and discipline count more than the grade point average on the report card. Punctuality, good performance and commitment during your studies are of great importance.
In what fields/subject areas can I work?
There is a very high demand for specialised personnel in the health sector. The complex health care structures and financing require a high level of professional competence and graduates of the study programme are in great demand on the job market. The Medical Controlling and Management programme has existed at MSH for over 10 years. Many students have already been able to take up jobs in hospitals as part-time jobs during their studies and the majority of all graduates have been offered permanent positions immediately after completing their studies.

What costs will I incur as part of my studies?
Tuition fee 625 euros per month (full-time), plus 100 euros one-off enrolment fee.
