Type of study

Dual course

SPECIALS

In this dual degree course, students acquire both an academic degree and a professional qualification in health and medical nursing or health and paediatric nursing. As a result, both degrees can be gained in just four years (instead of a three-year training course and a subsequent three-year degree course). The modular structure of the degree course allows students to carry out an internship and/or semester abroad during the regular study period.

Qualification on completion

Bachelor of Arts and license to practice as a registered nurse

What is the content of the course of studies?

The course is divided into individual modules, which impart the knowledge-based collection and identification of the individual care requirements, the planning and implementation of care based on scientific findings and individual case comprehension, the organization and design and management of care processes as well as overarching targeted interventions, especially nursing, communicative, psychosocial and ethical expertise. Furthermore, the study is divided into lectures which scientifically qualify the students for the many responsibilities of nursing support and introduce application-oriented working methods into the essential social, natural and behavioral science reference disciplines of care (medicine, psychology, sociology, education, law and politics). Students get a background understanding of the social and healthcare system and their political governance, gain scientific expertise to support applied care research, and basic knowledge of health-related case and process management. The curriculum is taught in different locations.

The teaching programme is realised at different locations. In the theory semesters, the courses take place in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. In addition, there are practical units in the Skills Lab. The practical semesters take place in cooperating health care facilities in and around Hamburg.

The degree program is developed in accordance with the new Nursing Professions Act. The degree integrates the professional license as a nursing specialist and the Bachelor of Science.

Where can I find employment later on?

Graduates can be employed in different healthcare institutions, such as hospitals, home care services, nursing homes, hospices, rehabilitation centers and special facilities.

What are the entry requirements?

  • General higher education entrance qualification or advanced technical college certificate for working people in accordance with § 38 of the Hamburg Higher Education Law.
  • Proof of a training contract with one of the cooperating training providers (currently the Albertinen-Diakoniewerk eV Hamburg, the Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf or the Altonaer Kinderkrankenhaus Hamburg) is required for admission to the course. Applications for a training place for generalized nursing care or generalized healthcare and child nursing care should be addressed directly to the cooperation partners (Albertinen-Schule, Universitäre Bildungsakademie or Altonaer-Kinderkrankenhaus Hamburg). Note: Please indicate in the application that a place in the dual degree course in nursing (BA) is sought. The educational institutions then automatically contact the university; no separate application to the university is necessary! Other requirements: At least a two-week nursing internship and medically fit to be able to carry out a nursing profession.

In what fields/subject areas can I work?

Graduates are prepared in giving professional care in partial inpatient (day-care), inpatient and outpatient healthcare facilities. The qualification profile of the course is broad, allowing for flexible entry into the profession, according to students’ individual interests. Graduates are qualified to identify care needs and provide nursing care services to people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Students are specifically prepared to systematically pursue different nursing directions, which include health-promoting, preventive, therapeutic, rehabilitative, palliative tasks as well as dignified end-of-life care. As an academically trained nurse, graduates have the responsibility to purposefully guide less skilled nurses, also to include lay caregivers and caregiving relatives in the care process, and to monitor their actions. Nursing work is now performed in cooperation with many other health professions, in close cooperation with, among others, doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists and psychotherapists. Students learn how to oversee in performance processes in healthcare and to control, coordinate and monitor them on a case-related basis.
