What is the content of the course of studies?

Modern medicine is constantly progressing, both in the basic disciplines and in the specialist medical disciplines. Practical demands on doctors and research-based medical professionals are constantly increasing. The Medical Faculty of the University of Hamburg has created the ‘iMED’ model course in medicine to address these challenges right from training. Its central guiding principle is its scientific orientation, i.e. the mediation of a critical stance, the awareness of problems and methods, the ability to structure and be independent, as well as the ability to orient towards evidence-based science. The task of training of practical skills is just as important as the promotion of psychosocial skills that are essential for the medical profession.

From the first semester, medical studies at Hamburg integrate theoretical, theoretical-clinical and clinical-practical aspects, so that theory and practical clinics can be continuously connected. All training content is developed from three perspectives (practical competences in diagnosis and therapy/theoretical fundamentals/social interaction with patients and colleagues).

SPECIALS

The programme always starts in the winter semester (beginning of January).

Qualification on completion

Master of Science

What is the content of the course of studies?

Mechatronic systems already have high economic and technical importance today, which will become even more significant in the future. In particular, mini and micro systems such as hard disks, pacemakers and driving stability systems are associated with the term mechatronics.

The Systems concept is key to mechatronics: Mechatronic developments call for the interaction of the engineering disciplines of mechanical engineering, electronics and information technology.

Students of Mechatronics at HSU are therefore trained in the holistic approach. They will later not be all-rounders though, but specialists with the ability for interdisciplinary thinking. In the Master’s in Mechatronics, the mandatory subjects of mathematics, numerical analysis, mechanics, fluid mechanics, machine dynamics, computer science and control systems reflect the spirit of mechatronics with their alignment. More of these basic subjects provide the student with methods that enable them to delve more deeply into more complex tasks. This is the cornerstone of a challenging job in the area of research and development or later in the context of a PhD. In addition, there is the specific mandatory subject ‘Mechatronic Systems’. The student can also choose between several specialisations (including Applied Mechanics, Automation Technology

Where can I find employment later on?

Mechatronics engineers are in demand on the job market. The mechatronics engineer is predestined for research and development with their holistic systematic approach. The application of mechatronic systems is also now commonplace in production planning and manufacturing industry, and increasingly taken up. Mechatronics engineers are also in high demand in sales and project planning positions because of their ability to communicate with experts from various disciplines.

In what fields/subject areas can I work?

The mechatronics engineer has wide areas of mechanical engineering and electronics open to him/her. It is not possible to give a comprehensive list of the areas of application here, but for example automotive technology, medical technology, process automation, consumer electronics, and systems construction are just a few.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Technically relevant bachelor, grade of at least ‘Good’.

What costs will I incur as part of my studies?

Free for members of the armed forces as part of an officer’s career. Proportionate tuition fees are charged for civilian students, which are covered by the sending cooperation company/authority (industrial scholarship) within the framework of targeted professional development. It is not possible to pay the fees independently (as a self-payer). The tuition fees for this degree programme currently amount to € 18,637.50.
