What are my activities in this job?
Medical-technical laboratory assistants conduct laboratory examinations of bodily tissues and bodily fluids (e.g. blood, urine). They take laboratory samples from patients, assist the doctor, prepare samples for testing and document the progress of the tests as well as the results.
These results serve as a basis for a diagnosis as well as for the prevention, detection and treatment of illness. They are also responsible for ensuring the quality of the samples and analysis methods and maintaining the condition of the necessary devices.
Where can I work?
Medical-technical laboratory assistants work in hospitals, doctor practices, medical laboratories, medical research facilities, pharmaceutical research laboratories, public health departments or blood donor services.
What requirements must I meet?
- General or subject-linked university entrance qualification
- Intermediate school-leaving qualification or
- Successful completion of a ten-year programme of education & training that follows the first general education school leaving certificate.
- First general education degree and a completed two-year apprenticeship program
- Interest in natural sciences
- Good to very good grades in physics, mathematics and biology
- Careful and precise way of working
- Health suitability
